Name one and only one. Let’s please not have a smorgasbord list of: “I use this one for this and that one for that and the other one for that over there”.
It’s understood that you might champion what you own; this is a valid reason because if you didn’t believe it to be a good cartridge you wouldn’t have bought the rifle for it. However it need not be one you own, perhaps one you would like to own or intend to own or even if not these reasons you still believe it best.
You might cite cartridges which do not make your one-item list of best all-around and give reasons why these don’t make it.
My selection: I have various rifles of different chambering but my idea of the best go-to cartridge is the 30-06.
I cite availability, price, power, and range. Others are more available. Others are cheaper. Others have more power. Others reach out farther. However, on a graph the 30-06 seems to have all these features meet in the middle.

Got to go with .22 long rifle, price, availability, number of manufactures of guns chambered for, popularity, number of rounds produced. Poachers take way too much game with it. I have more different guns that shoot this round than any other. [NAA mini, colt frontier scout, High Standard model GB, AMT 25/.22, remmington nylon 66] If there were a floor on power , or SD I might have gone 30.06 or .357 mag in a cabine.

Clay, I would agree on the 30-06, but the package deal on the '06 is the deal breaker for me. Most I have held are a bit bulky for this area. An all-round gun for me (that I own) would have to be my Win. 94.... 30-30......... Light, fast, and dependable.
